  10. Motion 2 Alteration to Clause 9 of the constitution ; Alteration of Club membership Fees . This motion is posed in the alternative depending on the result of Motion 1. In the event that Motion 1 is defeated and the club remain unaffiliated to the EBU.   S9.1 is changed from “ Each Member will pay a £1 joining Fee” to “ Each member will pay a £5 joining Fee”  S9.1.2 would also be changed from “ a lapsed member may rejoin any time on the payment of the £1 re-joining fee“ to “ a lapsed member may rejoin any time on the payment the £5 re-joining fee.” Proposer is Pat Haslam and seconded by Barry Leverett. OR In the event that Motion 1 is carried and the club joins the EBU that s9.1 (see above) becomes “Each Member shall pay an annual subscription fee which is decided by the AGM. Subscriptions will be due by the end of April. Unless the committee decides otherwise, any member whose subscription remains unpaid after the due date shall pay table money at the rate applicable to visitors until their subscription has been paid in full. “S9.1.2 (original is as above) would become ” A lapsed member may rejoin at any time on the payment of the prevailing annual subscription ” Under S9.2 table money would be increased to a rate of £2.50. S9.3 is changed from “Each guest or visitor shall pay table money on each occasion that he/she plays at the club and this shall be 50% more than the members table money” to “Each guest or visitor shall pay table money on each occasion that he /she plays at the club and this shall be £1.50p greater than members table money.” These changes are again proposed by Pat Haslam and seconded by Barry Leverett.

  12.    Motion 3 Proposer David Williams Seconded by Sally Williams “ The Membership of Bassingham Bridge Club propose that we stop using the arrow switch on the 2nd and 4th Thursday of each month” It should be understood that whereas this matter relates solely to the running of competitions it is therefore outside the decision making role of the AGM.  Such matters are under the direct control of the committee and the Tournament Directors they appoint. As the suggestion has been  made it should, of course,  be debated and recommendations will be noted by your committee.

The two general committee member roles are open for nominations until the date of the AGM. If no further nominations are received the two named above persons will be elected . If any further nominations are received an election will be held and the two persons with the highest number of votes will be elected.

Last Nights Bridge Results

It was drawn to our attention this morning that the published results for last nights duplicate competition were wrong and that in several cases it appeared that some boards played in the last round of the evening had not been scored. On investigation we believed 13 tables had been affected. So with the help of Pat Lucas this has now been corrected and I believe that all the scores entered into the Bridgemates are now reflected in the final result. This was republished earlier today on the club website. Inevitably this has meant changes to the results initially announced and we apologise for any inconvenience this may have caused. Thanks again for playing…hope you enjoyed the night….another huge attendance. Look forward to seeing you all soon. Enjoy your bridge.

Reminder of AGM Date and Deadlines

This notice is to remind you again that the club AGM will be held in Hammond Hall, Bassingham on Thursday 25th April 2024 with a prompt 6.30pm start as we hope to be able to play bridge from 7.00pm.ish depending on completing the agenda.

The purpose of this notice is to again give you the opportunity to take part in the running of your club and to give you some time to consider either a role you would be interested in taking on or by providing us with a proposal (motion) which either alters the constitution under which the club is run or one which would alter another area of running of the club.

The meeting has to be run under the conditions laid down by the constitution (which is available to all on the club web site) . In this are set down time lines for the receipt of nominations for officers of the club and for proposals to affect the running of the club.

So if you would like to be an officer of the club (Chair, Vice Chair, Secretary or Treasurer) then you MUST hand or e mail your nomination to me by the 31st March 2024. These should include the signature of not only the nominee but also a proposer and seconder. Please note as per the constitution all members of the current committee MUST retire at the AGM but are eligible to be re-elected. Accordingly they have all, with the exception of the Secretary, indicated a willingness to re -stand. It is very important to understand that only in the case of no nomination being received are we allowed to accept nominations from the floor on the day.

In a similar way we invite nominations for the other 2 committee posts. For these roles nomination (with proposers and seconders) can be accepted up to and including the date of the meeting. However I would ask for them to be sent /handed to me at the earliest opportunity please. Again the existing members must retire but have indicated their willingness to re -stand.

Should you wish to propose a motion to be discussed at the AGM then I must receive written notice of the motion together with the names of the proposer and seconder. You cannot merely submit a motion on the night. You must follow the rules as laid down in the constitution.and submit them by

a) for all matters that would require a change to the constitution 28 days prior to the meeting ( ie Thursday 28th March 2024)

b) for all other matter 21 days prior to the meeting ( ie Thursday 4th April 2024).

I will of course issue formal notice of the meeting and an agenda 14 days prior to the meeting in accordance with the club constitution which will include details of all nominations and motions received.

Thank you all and please carry on enjoying your bridge

Christmas Arrangements and Celebrations

Well yes its almost here!!! Only 6 more nights before Santa slides down the chimney and delivers those presents and ushers in that Christmas holiday period.

Just a little reminder that bridge on Thursday night (21st December) will not be the usual duplicate session but will be our Christmas Celebration of fun and jollity led by Dave Williams with Festive Food and drink and and the annual spoof raffle (FOC) led by Barry. The prizes will be something else!!!! Please join us and feel free to come in festive attire and add to the fun and laughter that normally ensues.

There will be no bridge after Thursday 21st until the New Year when our timetable will begin with Beginners on Wednesday3rd and our usual duplicate session on Thursday4th January. There is NO social bridge on Tuesday 2nd January it will recommence on the Tuesday 9th January.

So all that remains is for your committee to wish you and yours our very best wishes for Christmas and our hopes that you all enjoy a healthy and prosperous New Year.

All the best , enjoy the season as best you can, see you back playing bridge the first week in January.

Jim on behalf of each and every member of your committee.

Important News For Duplicate Bridge Players on Thursday 7th December 2023.

The club duplicate session on Thursday (tomorrow) will be going ahead as normal but instead of being in the main Hall it will be in the Tower Room. ( Upstairs in the building next to the main hall). The main hall will be being used for Xmas festivities by the WI , so unless you want to join them please be careful which door you are attempting to get in.

The Tower room is much smaller than the main hall and whilst I know that many members have arranged league or knock out matches for tomorrow night space will still be at a premium. Please understand we are obliged to comply with fire regulations and cannot just cram people in. If you want to play , please turn up between 6.30 and 6.45pm if at all possible and take a seat …the director will take it from there.

Finally given the fact that there are 2 events in Hammond Hall; car parking may become an issue …. again a good reason for being prompt and grabbing your seats. Please park considerately and be kind to everybody.

Hope you have a great night’s bridge wherever you are playing.

Regards

Jim

Important Notice ; Bridge on Thursday 5th October 2023!!!!

As many of you will already know there are 2 Thursday’s every year where we cannot use the main room in Hammond Hall as the WI hold long established large events involving food and drink. This Thursday is one of those dates. I know that several league and cup matches have already been arranged for Thursday evening which is very useful as club bridge will be in the Tower Room at the usual time. Please note the change of room and please do not try and enter the WI event ( unless you have already bought a ticket) . The tower room is a much smaller venue ( adjacent to the main building) and will only hold 9-10 tables safely, there will be little choice for the Director but to deal with everyone on a 1st come, 1st served basis. Please given the space involved take your seats asap.. Hopefully given the prearranged fixtures everyone will be able to enjoy a fine evening of Bridge.

Finally we have received a hand crafted thank you card from all the members of Bassingham Scouts thanking us for our generous donation ( from the Roy Hughes Memorial Charity Day)towards establishing their local camp site. Again a hugely successful event and our huge thanks go to all who attended, donated prizes, cakes or other edibles or helped on the day. Well done all!!!

Kind Regards

Jim

Reminder about the return of Wednesday Night Improver Sessions

Just a little reminder that our Wednesday evening (7.00 – 9.00 pm in the Tower Room) improver sessions recommence on Wednesday 3 May. Our intention this term is to run gentle, assisted, duplicate bridge sessions of 12 boards. Advice about bidding, playing and defending will still be freely available from the tutors.
These sessions will be scored and the results and hand analysis will be available on the club website after each session. A hand commentary will also be available.
We would like to invite ANY interested members to come along to these sessions, whether it is to pick up a few tips yourselves or to partner and encourage our class members in the ways of duplicate bridge.
Thanks

Jim

Club AGM – Important Notice – 2nd reminder

I wrote to you all on 3rd March ( see earlier blog) to remind you that the club AGM was on Thursday 27th April 2023 with a prompt 6.30pm start to enable us to play bridge from about 7.00 pm.

The main purpose of that notice and of this reminder was a) to ask the membership for nominations ( together with a proposer and seconder) for officers of the club for the next year. The current committee will stand down at the AGM as per the constitution but have all indicated their willingness to stand for a further year and b) to ask the membership for resolutions (must be proposed and seconded) to better the running of the club.

We are now rapidly approaching the deadlines for these to be given to me as club secretary….so please note that the deadlines are as follows
1) Nominations for officers of the club(together with proposer and seconder) must be with me by 31st March 2023
2) Resolutions which require a change to the constitution must be with me by the Thursday 30th March 2023
3) Any other resolutions must be with me by Thursday 6th April.2023

Please note under the constitution these dates are absolute deadlines and in the case of election of officers nominations can only be made from the floor on the day where no nomination has been received by the deadline.

I look forward to receiving all such communications either by e mail to me at jamesm.wallace@yahoo.co.uk or in writing at the bridge club.

Thank You and please keep on enjoying your bridge.

Club Secretary
