Wednesday social Bridge in August

As only four people indicated that would like to play bridge on Wednesday evenings in August, this will not now be going ahead. Thanks to those people who had agreed to run the evenings.

Improver sessions will recommence on Wednesday 1st September.

Wednesday Social Bridge in August

The Wednesday Evening Bridge Sessions are primarily intended for people learning to play bridge and practise their skills. These sessions end in July and recommence in September, which means that the month of August could be available for anyone wanting to play social bridge. This would be in addition to the usual Tuesday afternoon bridge session.

If there is sufficient interest, Jim Wallace has kindly agreed to be in charge of the first session on Wednesday 4th August, between 7 and 10pm – but other volunteers would be needed for future sessions. In order to gauge interest would you please email me if you would intend coming to all or any of these Wednesday Evening Sessions.

Curry Bridge Evening – Yes it’s Back!

Almost exactly 16 months ago, 44 of you booked for a Curry bridge Evening at Newark Golf Club, which we had to cancel at the last minute for reasons only too well known. Those 44 people, most of whom have already paid, will be given priority for our next Curry Bridge Evening which is planned for Wednesday 13th October.

If you can remember booking last time please email me – or tell me when you see me – whether you want to keep your place. If you can’t remember whether you booked or not I’ll be able to tell you. If you booked last time and had to back out you will receive a refund as will anyone who has already paid and now can’t make it on the 13th October. If places become available they’ll be offered on a first come first served basis.

The price remains the same at £8 per head. You can arrive on the night from 6.30pm onwards when the bar will be open. The bridge will start at 7pm and we break for curry as near to 8pm as we can. Bridge resumes after curry and we finish round about 10pm. Andy Milner has kindly agreed to direct; the bridge will be straightforward shuffle and deal Chicago.

Bassingham Bridge Club Accounts

Please find attached the Bassingham Bridge Club Accounts for the years 2019-20 and 2020-21. These accounts have been audited and signed but the audited copies attached below are not signed since scanned copies come out very blurred. If anyone requires a signed copy they can contact me for one or otherwise contact Roger Baker for verification. I will try to answer any queries you may have about the accounts at the AGM.

BBC Competition Results

Thanks to all those people who took part in the “Three Tiered” Competition. The winning position for the cryptic quiz was keenly fought – in fact the final position was “triple locked.”

All twenty clues were solved – but not by the same person, so the final result was a triple tie with nineteen and a half points out of twenty:

Chris Pickering

Sandra Braithwaite

Tony & Jean Tyler

Runners up with nineteen points were Diane Sharpe and Pat Lucas

The winner of the Lockdown Anecdote was Alan Timmis with his piece entitled “New Best Friend.” (This is an extract from his latest book “Covid in Glory.”) Runner up was Tony Tyler.

The winner of the third section – a lockdown limerick – was Sarah Hassnip, with Lesley as runner up.

Prizes will be despatched by Securicor asap.

Opening the files below should show you the quiz answers and the winning anecdote and limerick entries.

Competition Reminder

Just a reminder that there is still time to take part in the BBC Quiz and Anecdote Competitions. Details – under Alternatives, sent out on October 1st – can be found on the BBC Blog (which you can access from the BBC Website).

I’m adding a third category for this last fortnight: “A Lockdown Limerick” – for which I feel there’s plenty of scope! So if you’ve already entered the other categories – or particularly if you haven’t – now’s the chance to put your latent poetry talents to good use!

Closing date for all competitions is November 30th. Entries to be emailed to me.

Amazing prizes await the winners!

Go on……………have a go!!

Lockdown Anecdote

It would seem that the Literary Giants amongst our Membership cannot contain themselves to 500 words, so the upper limit is now extended to 1000 words (or thereabouts!). Entries far in excess of “thereabouts” may be forwarded to The Donald for use in his re-election campaign.

……..and now for something completely different – as a diversion from the B – – – – – word!

You may enter either or both.

The Bassingham Bridge Club Cryptic Lockdown Quiz

I know some of you – well maybe one of you – will be sorely missing the Blakeney Quiz, so I thought I would compile one where the answers are fairly topical at the moment and open it up to all Club Members. So if you’re looking for a different diversion from reading, gardening, overeating/drinking, zooming the grandkids, writing your memoirs – or anything really – why not have a go at this simple, relaxing and “highly entertaining” quiz! You could be in line for a “magnificent prize!” Winning entries – assuming there’s more than one! – will be entered into a draw.

Closing date for entries (to be emailed to me) is November 30th 2020.

An amusing Lockdown anecdote – real or imagined!

Puy tour literary skills to the test (in not more than 500 words!) by relating something which happened – or could have happened! – during Lockdown. Again an amazing prize awaits the winning entry!

Closing date for entries (to be emailed to me) is November 30th 2020.

For the quiz open the file below – if that creates a problem I can email it to you.
